DESCRIPTION:Home Composting Demonstration Day!\nSaturday\, May 2nd 2026\n2:30 PM – 4:00 PM\nUCRRA Main Office\n999 Flatbush Road\, Kingston NY\nJoin UCRRA’s Recycling Outreach Team in the  outdoor home composting demonstration garden! This program is a hybrid instructional class with a guided tour component\, taking participants through each step of the composting process with hands-on demonstrations. The guided tour will highlight the various home composting methods and bin options\, comparing the pros/cons of compost tumblers\, enclosed bins\, three bin systems\, vermicomposting\, and more! Our educators will help participants learn about all the composting options so they can find their best option! \nClass size is limited and participants must pre-register. Register by clicking the button below and we will see you in the garden!  \nSign Up HEREAccessibility: This is an outdoor event. Accessible parking is available and the garden is a short walk (approximately 75 feet) from the parking area. The garden terrain is gravel rock and there are picnic benches available for seating. Accessible bathrooms are available indoors (Main Office\, first floor). Social distancing and use of face masks are encouraged but not required. \nWe strive to offer equal program opportunities. Feed the Soil that Feeds Us! Each year\, a new theme for ICAW is chosen. The 2026 theme is Feed the Soil that Feeds Us! Soil is the foundation of life. It grows the food we eat\, filters the water we drink\, and sustains the biodiversity that keeps our ecosystems in balance. Yet soil is also one of our most threatened resources\, with erosion\, top soil & nutrient depletion\, and contamination endangering its health worldwide. This theme highlights the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) as the anchor. This year’s theme ties directly to UN SDG 15: Life on Land\, reinforcing that protecting and restoring soil is a global priority and one of the most impactful ways we can care for the planet. When we apply high quality compost\, we are investing in the health of our soil\, ensuring it continues to provide the food\, clean water\, and resilience that all life depends on. \nThis year’s winner of the ICAW 2026 Poster Contest is Endurance Oye of Mowe\, Ogun State\, Nigeria. “Inspired by what he calls the “quiet intelligence of nature\,” Endurance’s work reflects how the earth transforms what we discard into nourishment and new life. Growing up close to the land\, he observed firsthand how fallen leaves\, food scraps\, and organic matter return to the soil and fuel renewal. After a few weeks\, the resulting pre-compost finishes quickly in a backyard pile\, providing a more biologically diverse compost product. Learn the science behind this method of managing food scraps\, the tools you need for this system\, step by step instructions on the process and a recipe for making your own bokashi bran. \n* Supplies Are Limited *  Please register to ensure your spot! \nThis workshop will be presented by Eva Barnett\, Recycling and Composting Educator at the UCRRA. \nSign Up Now! It’s science; but it’s not rocket science!\nJoin the Ulster County Resource Recovery Agency’s Recycling Outreach Team for a community conversation about Home Composting Basics. This free workshop is designed for composters who are exploring the different options and methods. The class will introduce the benefits of home composting and the principles of how to do it correctly (balancing browns and greens\, avoiding animals\, maintenance tips and more). Then\, participants will learn the pros and cons when comparing different bins to find the perfect option no matter your situation. This class will also cover all the ways you can use finished compost to boost your garden’s soil health. It’s Compost Awareness Week!
