DESCRIPTION:Composting for Kids!\nThursday October 16th 2025\n4:00 PM – 6:00 PM\nFAMILY of Ellenville\n221 Canal St. Ellenville\nParticipants will hear a brief introduction about what is composting and why it is an important way of protecting our environment. Then\, educators will guide children through an interactive reading of “Compost Stew” by author Mary McKenna Siddals and other short stories. Participants will then be able to observe a live worm bin\, identify worms at each stage of their lifecycle\, learn about worm ecology\, and learn how to compost indoors using a worm bin. This FREE workshop is suitable for children ages 7 and up\, and parental supervision is advised. \nAccessibility: Family of Ellenville is a very convenient and accessible building located in the town of Ellenville\, 221 Canal Street. Participants can park at the front of the building or in the back. The workshops will take place in the backyard of the building\, which offers plenty of parking and is easily accessible. There is a wheelchair accessible ramp in front of the building. Bathrooms can be accessed inside of the building. Many staff members are fluent in English and Spanish. All are welcome to our programs. It is the responsibility of the parent/guardian of any particular child to help with the child’s participation and behavior. \nWe strive to offer equal program opportunities. We’ll start by talking about why composting is important and how it helps our planet. Bleach\, ammonia\, and oven cleaners are examples of chemical cleaning agents that can irritate our skin\, eyes\, and respiratory tract. Some beauty products also contain fragrances and chemicals whose health risks are still unknown. Many of these products are also classified as Hazardous Waste and require safe disposal. \nAlthough eco-friendly alternatives are becoming more widely available in stores\, you can easily make your own at home with very simple and low-cost ingredients! DESCRIPTION:UCRRA Celebrates International Compost Awareness Week!\n“Composting for Kids” with UCRRA\nTuesday\, May 6th 2025\n3:30 – 4:30 PM\nStone Ridge Library\n3700 Main St\, Stone Ridge\, NY\n\n\nIn this interactive and activity-lead class for kids\, participants will learn about making compost with worms\, and will get to make seed bombs to bring home! \nPart 1: Composting Worms\nParticipants will hear a brief introduction about composting and why it is an important way of protecting our environment. Then\, Recycling Educator eva Barnett will guide students through an interactive reading of “Compost Stew” by author Mary McKenna Siddals. Participants will then be able to observe a live worm bin\, identify worms at each stage of their lifecycle\, learn about worm ecology\, and learn how to compost indoors using a worm bin. \nPart 2: Making Seed Bombs\nAt this station\, participants will learn that our favorite fruits\, vegetables\, nuts\, seeds\, and other foods rely on Pollinators. Pollinators pollinate 90% of all flowering plants\, but studies have shown that their populations have been declining in recent decades. Participants will create seed balls\, or seed bombs\, which are small clusters of compost\, clay\, and wildflower seeds that are designed to add pollinator habitats to urban landscapes\, neglected areas\, or wherever you’d like! All craft materials will be provided. \nThis FREE workshop is suitable for children ages 7 and up\, and parental supervision is advised. DESCRIPTION:This program is affiliated with NYers for Cool Refrigerant Management.  Free drop off and recycling of refrigerant containing appliances on various dates at the Town of New Paltz Reuse & Recycling Center:   \n\nTuesday\, May 6th 2025 from 9:00am – 1:00pm\nTuesday\, May 20th 2025 from 12:00pm – 4:00pm\nSaturday\, May 24th 2025 from 9:00am – 1:00pm\nEvent Summary: \nThe Ulster County Coolest Recycling Drive is organized by Sustainable Hudson Valley and New Yorkers for Cool Refrigerant Management\, with additional support and in-kind donations from the New Paltz ReUse and Recycling Center\, Climate Smart Kingston\, and New Yorkers for Clean Power. Between May 6th and May 24th\, residents of Ulster County (and neighboring counties) will have multiple opportunities to drop off their old refrigerant containing devices free of charge\, to be properly disposed of and recycled. The primary drop off and short term storage site for appliances will be the Town of New Paltz ReUse and Recycling Center (open to all)\, as well as an option for City of Kingston residents to drop off at the Kingston Earth Fair on 5/10 at TR Gallo Park in Kingston. \nAt the end of the recycling drive the refrigerant chemicals will be safely extracted and sent for reclamation by JGS Recycling and Hauling. This program covers items such as refrigerators\, window air conditioners\, dehumidifiers\, water coolers\, freezers and mini fridges.  Refrigerant canisters are also accepted. \nWhy Safe Disposal Matters: \nThe program goal is to help properly recycle refrigerant-containing appliances and call attention to the need for next-generation policies to cover costs of proper refrigerant reclamation\, training of technicians and proper disposal of refrigerants. The chemicals used as refrigerants are engineered and industrially produced to be able to transfer heat when trapped in a pressurized system. When these chemicals are released into the atmosphere\, they become greenhouse gasses that are thousands of times more powerful than carbon dioxide. A single air conditioner can hold up to 2 pounds of R410A\, which when released into the atmosphere\, over the next 20 years will act like almost 10\,000 pounds of carbon dioxide – similar to the emissions as driving a car for a full year. \nCan’t make it to the event(s) but want to learn more about the safe disposal of air conditioners\, refrigerators\, and other refrigerant containing devices? SUMMARY:Indoor & Cold Weather Composting Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Composting slows in colder weather. Learn some helpful tips to keep your outdoor compost pile “cooking” even in the colder months! Participants will learn about two methods of Indoor Composting: Vermicomposting (composting with worms) and Bokashi (anaerobic composting with a microbial accelerator). These methods are not only great for cold weather composting\, but they’re useful tools for composting all year round whether you live in a small space\, an apartment\, or in a group settings. By learning the basics and a few simple tips and tricks\, anyone can be successful at these methods of indoor composting. This workshop will explain everything you need to know to get started. Come join us to learn about the wacky world of worms and microbes and these interesting and advanced methods of composting! \nPlease pre-register (linked below) to reserve your seat in this class. \nAccessibility: The Town of New Paltz Community Center does not provide accessibility as prescribed by the 2010 Americans with Disabilities Act. DESCRIPTION:Spring MRDC Informational Recycling Meetings\nThe Ulster County Resource Recovery Agency’s Recycling Outreach Team welcomes Town Transfer Station Operators from Ulster County to join us for an Informational Meeting for Municipal Recycling Drop-Off Centers. \nWe are offering two options to join: \nMonday\, March 24th 2025\n11:00 am – 1:00 pm\nRondout Municipal Center Room M1\, 1915 Lucas Ave Ext\, Cottekill\, NY 12419\n* This meeting will also feature guest speaker Westley Baxter\, Program Coordinator for Paint Care New York\, who will share a unique opportunity for local transfer stations to partner with Paint Care to offer paint recycling services at your MRDC. \nThursday\, March 27th 2025\n5:30 pm – 7:30 pm\nMarlboro Town Hall Court Room\, 21 Milton Tpke\, Milton\, NY 12547\n*Information about Paint Care NY will also be made available at this session. \nThese meetings are beneficial in understanding the Agency’s Recycling Outreach Team Services\, reviewing recycling data and presenting on best practices that we have seen from various MRDCs throughout the county\, and discussing future projects related to food waste and reuse. \nThis meeting will be closed to the general public. The Agency will provide each Town who sends an employee from their MRDC a voucher for one free pull charge. DESCRIPTION: Saugerties Repair Cafe\nSaturday\, February 1st 2025\n10:00 AM – 2:00 PM\nFrank D. Greco Memorial Senior Citizens Center\n207 Market Street Saugerties\, NY\nHudson Valley Repair Cafe offers free pop-up events across the County where people can learn how to fix their “broken but beloved” items for FREE\, working with expert fixers (repair coaches) who are also your neighbors!  Each Repair Cafe event may have a broad list of items they can troubleshoot and repair\, depending on the specialty of the local volunteer Repair Coaches. \nJoin UCRRA’s Recycling Outreach Team at Repair Cafe\, where our booth will focus on helping you to “repair” your recycling habits! Our educators will be on hand to help answer any waste\, recycling\, or composting questions and distribute free reusable swag for anyone who stops by our booth! \nAt this Cafe\, volunteer repair coaches can help fix the following items: \nELECTRICAL APPLIANCES lamps\, toasters\, etc. \nWOOD/FURNITURE repair/glueing \nMECHANICAL: watches\, clocks\, etc. \nCOMPUTERS \nTEXTILES: sewing\, mending\, \nZIPPERS \nDOLLS: restringing \nJEWELRY \nSEWING MACHINES \nPHOTO scan/restore \nVisible Mending Workshop: Max 6 slots available. \nFrom 10:15 a.m. – 11:15 a.m. they will also be holding a Visible Mending Workshop where you can learn to do your own visible textile repairs (aka ‘visible mending’). As one of the goals of Repair Cafes is to teach those who want to learn how to do their own repairs\, our sewing volunteer Julia Gloninger will offer a 1 hr. workshop to teach you some simple sewing techniques to create a unique\, ornamental\, and eye-catching design that will highlight instead of hide the damaged area. To participate in this workshop\, please send an email to repaircafesaugerties@gmail.com with your name\, email\, item to repair (fabric item that needs a small repair\, no larger than a 2″x2″ or 3″x 3″ repair area)\, and if you will be bringing your own supplies or using a set of ours\, and any questions to. If you have your own supplies\, bring them. If not\, we will have all the supplies you may borrow for the workshop. If you want to bring your own\, we suggest: needle (pointed embroidery needle for woven fabric\, blunt darning needle for knits)\, pins\, embroidery floss in colors of your choice\, small scissors or thread snips\, fabric for a patch\, pencil for marking\, spool of thread\, thimble\, and small embroidery hoop. \nQuestions? Join UCRRA’s Recycling Educator\, Tanesia White\, for an insightful “trash talk” where you’ll discover creative DIY gift ideas for everyone on your list\, get practical tips for reducing waste\, and explore alternative disposal methods for those tricky holiday items. \nTanesia will be speaking virtually\, but you can choose to attend the session either online or in person at the Wallkill Public Library.
