SUMMARY:Intro to Home Composting
DESCRIPTION:Fall Seminar: Intro to Home Composting\nThursday\, October 6th 2022\n6:00-7:30 PM\nRosendale Public Library\n264 Main St. Rosendale\, NY 12472\n \nHome composting is a great way to manage food scraps like fruit and vegetable peels\, coffee grounds\, stale bread\, eggshells\, and other scraps or spoiled foods. When food is landfilled\, it’s responsible for most of the environmental pollution coming from landfills. But when food and other plant materials are mixed together in a backyard bin or pile\, this material can be recycled into garden compost! \nThis free workshop is designed for new/beginner composters that have little or no knowledge about composting systems. The class will introduce the benefits of organics recycling\, and review some of the science behind how composting works\, and the principles of how to do it correctly. \nParticipants will learn everything they need to know to get started and gain knowledge about the various compost bin options and the pros and cons of each. Each participant will go home with a free kitchen food scrap collection container to help them get started! \nAt the end of the seminar\, participants will learn why using compost is beneficial for soil health\, and will learn how to use their compost right in their own backyard. \nThis class will be offered in person at the Town of Rosendale Public Library\, with hosts Angelina Brandt\, Director of Sustainability and Tanesia White\, Recycling Educator of the Ulster County Resource Recovery Agency.  Please pre-register by Monday\, October 3rd. Register by clicking the button below.  \nSign Up for this Class! Accessibility: This event will take place in the outdoor gazebo behind the library\, which is a short walk from the parking area along a paved surface. There is one stair to enter into the gazebo.  Accessible bathrooms are available indoors. Please dress for Fall weather as this will be an outdoor event. The use of face masks is encouraged but are not required\, unless the event is moved indoors. \nWe strive to offer equal program opportunities. Educational resources in Spanish are available by request. If you require any special accommodations or have questions about this program\, please contact Angelina Brandt\, Director of Sustainability\, at APEO@UCRRA.ORG  or 845-336-0600. \nShare This Info!

SUMMARY:Informational Meeting - Municipal Food Scraps Hauling Project
DESCRIPTION:Informational Meeting:\nUCRRA Municipal Food Scraps Hauling Pilot Project\nMonday\, July 25th 2022\n10:00 AM – 11:30 AM\nVirtual via WEBEX Teleconferencing\nIn May of 2022 the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation announced a new grant program that will provide funding to projects in New York State that increase residential food scraps recycling programs. Organics recycling (composting) continues to be an important focus for UCRRA and the Agency is dedicated to facilitating effective and convenient programs for widespread participation in our composting services. \nUCRRA is actively developing a project proposal that could provide municipalities with FREE tools to launch and facilitate a residential food scraps collection program at Municipal Recycling Drop Off Centers\, as well as FREE use of the necessary equipment to deliver the collected material to our composting site. \nThe overarching goals of this project are to:\n• Foster inter-governmental relationships that maximize resource recovery\n• Maximize financial savings for municipalities via avoided MSW transport and disposal costs\n• Eliminate the logistical obstacles that prevent community-scale composting programs\n• Increase diversion of residential food scraps generated in Ulster County\n• Compliment the implementation of the local and state laws with organics recycling goals\n• Support the Agency’s zero waste goals\n• Demonstrate the environmental\, economic\, and social benefits of composting \nWe invite Town Supervisors\, Transfer Station Operators\, Climate Smart Task Force Members\, Town Board members/planners\, etc. to attend this informational webinar to learn about our project and how your town can partner with us and save an estimated $4\,420 per year. \nPlease follow the link below to register for this meeting. Should you have any questions about the project\, please contact: \nAngelina Brandt\nDirector of Sustainability\nAPEO@UCRRA.ORG\n(845) 336-0600 \nRegister to this Meeting Share This Story!

SUMMARY:Intro to Home Composting
DESCRIPTION:Spring Seminar: Intro to Home Composting\n \nHome composting is a great way to manage food scraps like fruit and vegetable peels\, coffee grounds\, stale bread\, eggshells\, and other scraps or spoiled foods. When these materials are mixed together along with leaves\, grass clippings\, and other yard wastes\, the natural process of composting begins! \nThis workshop is designed for new/beginner composters. The class will introduce the benefits of organics recycling\, share some of the science behind how composting works\, and provide an overview of what materials should and should not be composted and how to mix  materials together. Our educators will compare various compost bin options and explain the pros and cons of each. Beginner composters should know some tips and tricks to avoid pests and odors\, as these can easily be avoided! At the end of the seminar\, participants will learn about why using compost is beneficial for soil health\, and will learn how to use the compost that they will create right in their own backyard. \nThis class will be offered in person at the Town of Plattekill Library\, with guest speakers Angelina Brandt\, Director of Sustainability and Tanesia White\, Recycling Educator at the Ulster County Resource Recovery Agency. \nSIGN UP HERE!\nWe’re Celebrating Compost Awareness Week!\n\nAbout ICAW: International Compost Awareness Week  is the largest and most comprehensive education initiative of the compost industry. SUMMARY:Just Eat It: A Food Waste Story
DESCRIPTION:Celebrating International Compost Awareness Week!\nUCRRA has partnered with Upstate Films & The Orpheum Theater for this community screening of the educational documentary Just Eat It: A Food Waste Story. The 1PM Sunday showing on May 1st will feature FREE ADMISSION\, sponsored by the Ulster County Resource Recovery Agency. This program is the kick-off event for UCRRA’s Compost Awareness Week\, celebrated statewide and internationally. A panel style Q&A about local composting initiatives will follow the screening. Visit the Compost Awareness Week outreach table for more information about reducing wasted food\, backyard composting and more! \nWe all love food. As a society\, we devour countless cooking shows\, culinary magazines and foodie blogs… So how could we possibly be throwing nearly 50% of it in the trash?\n\n\n\nSynopsis\n\nFilmmakers and food lovers Jen and Grant dive into the issue of waste from farm\, through retail\, all the way to the back of their own fridge. After catching a glimpse of the billions of dollars of good food that is tossed each year in North America\, they pledge to quit grocery shopping cold turkey and survive only on foods that would otherwise be thrown away. In a nation where one in 10 people is food insecure\, the images they capture of squandered groceries are both shocking and strangely compelling. But as Grant’s addictive personality turns full tilt towards food rescue\, the ‘thrill of the find’ has unexpected consequences. Featuring interviews with TED lecturer\, author and activist Tristram Stuart and acclaimed author Jonathan Bloom\, Just Eat It looks at our systemic obsession with expiry dates\, perfect produce and portion sizes\, and reveals the core of this seemingly insignificant issue that is having devastating consequences around the globe. Just Eat It brings farmers\, retailers\, inspiring organizations\, and consumers to the table in a cinematic story that is equal parts education and delicious entertainment.\n\n\nUpstate Films at the Orpheum offer a ticket link on their website.
