DESCRIPTION:Composting 101!\nSaturday\, June 27th 2026\n12:30PM – 2PM\nOlive Free Library\n4033 Route 28A\nWest Shokan\, NY 12494\n\n\nCompost Happens! You don’t have to be an expert to be successful at backyard composting; you just need to learn a few basic tips and tricks to get cooking. It’s science; but it’s not rocket science!\n\nJoin the Ulster County Resource Recovery Agency’s Recycling Outreach Team for a community conversation about Home Composting Basics. This free workshop is designed for composters who are exploring the different options and methods. The class will introduce the benefits of home composting and the principles of how to do it correctly (balancing browns and greens\, avoiding animals\, maintenance tips and more). Then\, participants will learn the pros and cons when comparing different bins to find the perfect option no matter your situation. Plus: An introduction to vermicomposting (composting with worms) for indoor composting solutions. This class will be hosted by Eva Barnett\, Recycling Educator with the UCRRA’s Recycling Outreach Team. \n\n\n\nClass size is limited and participants must pre-register. SUMMARY:UCRRA 40th Anniversary Sticker Design Contest
DESCRIPTION:We are celebrating our 40th anniversary by inviting young artists across Ulster County to participate in a community-wide Sticker Design Contest. Open to residents ages 8–18\, the contest encourages creativity while promoting environmental awareness and waste sustainability. \nParticipants are challenged to create an original design that reflects themes of recycling\, composting\, waste reduction\, and sustainability. The winning artwork will be professionally printed as a sticker and distributed by UCRRA’s Recycling Outreach Team at community events throughout the county. \nContest Details: \n\nOpen to Ulster County residents ages 8–18\nDesign must fit within a 2-inch diameter circle\nAll artistic mediums are welcome\, including hand-drawn or digital designs\nSubmissions must be provided as a PDF or JPEG file\nDesigns must include the text: “UCRRA est. 1986” and “ucrra.org”\nPlease include the artist’s name\, age\, and town with all submissions\n\nEntries must be submitted via email to eree@ucrra.org by June 30. \nA panel will select the top six finalists\, whose designs will be featured this summer for public voting online and in person during the Ulster County Fair. The contest winner will be announced in September. \nIn addition to having their design professionally produced and shared countywide\, the grand prize winner will receive a free home composting bin and a UCRRA swag bag. \nUCRRA encourages students\, families\, and educators to participate and help celebrate four decades of advancing waste reduction and recycling efforts in Ulster County. \n\nWe strive to offer equal program opportunities. DESCRIPTION:Worms\, Compost & Seed Bombs!\nThursday\, July 30th\n3:30pm – 4:30 PM\nTown of Ulster Public Library\n860 Ulster Avenue\nKingston\nJoin us for a fun and hands-on program all about compost\, worms\, and seeds! We’ll start by talking about why composting is important and how it helps our planet. We’ll read Compost Stew by Mary McKenna Siddals\, a playful ABC book that introduces kids to the idea of composting and what goes into making healthy soil. Kids will then get to meet real Red Wiggler Worms and take a peek inside a live worm bin! We’ll learn what worms eat\, how they live\, and how they turn food scraps into super-powered fertilizer. To wrap up\, we’ll get creative making seed bombs—little balls of clay\, compost\, and wildflower seeds that kids can take home to plant and help pollinators like bees and butterflies.\nThis program is perfect for ages 5–8 \nAccessibility: There is a large parking lot in the back and ADA accessible spaces across from the front door. There is also handicap parking and we are located on one floor with no steps. \nWe strive to offer equal program opportunities. Educational resources in Spanish are available by request.
