SUMMARY:People Over Plastic - Rally & Advocacy Day
DESCRIPTION:Join UCRRA and Beyond Plastics on Tuesday\, February 9th\, 2026 at the NY State Capitol in Albany to urge your state Legislators to put people over plastic by passing the Packaging Reduction & Recycling Infrastructure Act. This critical bill that was passed by the NY Senate in May 2025 will address the crisis of planet-warming\, ocean-polluting\, landfill-clogging\, human health-harming single-use plastics by reducing them at the source while saving taxpayers money and providing support for recycling and reuse/refill efforts. RSVP now. \nWe’ll gather at the Legislative Office Building at 10AM for an orientation with coffee and refreshments. You’ll hear from our organizers and legislative champions\, and we’ll introduce everyone to team leaders and members. We’ll begin with a rousing rally\, then spend the afternoon meeting with state legislators to urge them to pass this critical bill this session. \nYou will be part of a group with an experienced team leader\, and we will provide you with talking points\, memos\, and information in advance. Free bus service is available with stops in New Paltz and Kingston. We hope you will join us in Albany. Please RSVP now. \n \nShare This Event!

SUMMARY:The "Coolest" Recycling Drive
DESCRIPTION:This program is affiliated with NYers for Cool Refrigerant Management.  Free drop off and recycling of refrigerant containing appliances on various dates at the Town of New Paltz Reuse & Recycling Center:   \n\nTuesday\, May 6th 2025 from 9:00am – 1:00pm\nTuesday\, May 20th 2025 from 12:00pm – 4:00pm\nSaturday\, May 24th 2025 from 9:00am – 1:00pm\nEvent Summary: \nThe Ulster County Coolest Recycling Drive is organized by Sustainable Hudson Valley and New Yorkers for Cool Refrigerant Management\, with additional support and in-kind donations from the New Paltz ReUse and Recycling Center\, Climate Smart Kingston\, and New Yorkers for Clean Power. Between May 6th and May 24th\, residents of Ulster County (and neighboring counties) will have multiple opportunities to drop off their old refrigerant containing devices free of charge\, to be properly disposed of and recycled. The primary drop off and short term storage site for appliances will be the Town of New Paltz ReUse and Recycling Center (open to all)\, as well as an option for City of Kingston residents to drop off at the Kingston Earth Fair on 5/10 at TR Gallo Park in Kingston. \nAt the end of the recycling drive the refrigerant chemicals will be safely extracted and sent for reclamation by JGS Recycling and Hauling. This program covers items such as refrigerators\, window air conditioners\, dehumidifiers\, water coolers\, freezers and mini fridges.  Refrigerant canisters are also accepted. \nWhy Safe Disposal Matters: \nThe program goal is to help properly recycle refrigerant-containing appliances and call attention to the need for next-generation policies to cover costs of proper refrigerant reclamation\, training of technicians and proper disposal of refrigerants. The chemicals used as refrigerants are engineered and industrially produced to be able to transfer heat when trapped in a pressurized system. When these chemicals are released into the atmosphere\, they become greenhouse gasses that are thousands of times more powerful than carbon dioxide. A single air conditioner can hold up to 2 pounds of R410A\, which when released into the atmosphere\, over the next 20 years will act like almost 10\,000 pounds of carbon dioxide – similar to the emissions as driving a car for a full year. \nCan’t make it to the event(s) but want to learn more about the safe disposal of air conditioners\, refrigerators\, and other refrigerant containing devices? SUMMARY:Plastic People: The Hidden Crisis of Microplastics
DESCRIPTION:The Marbletown Environmental Commission (ECC) & Rosendale Environmental Commission (REC) have partnered to present a special Earth Week screening and Q&A with community leaders and experts. A portion of ticket sales will go towards screening another environmental film in the future. \nThe screening will include a post-film panel and Q&A discussion featuring: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJen Metzger\, Ulster County Executive\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMarc Rider\, Executive Director Ulster County Resource Recovery Agency (UCRRA)\nMegan Wolff\, PhD.\, MPH\, Executive Director P-SNAP\, the Physician and Scientist Network Addressing Plastics and Health\n\nCost-saving solutions for addressing the challenges of toxic plastics will be offered by our local sponsors including: High Falls Food Co-op\, Second Nature Refillery\, and Climate Smart Tiffin Project. Visit their tables 6:30-7pm and following the Q&A. \nAbout the film: The ground-breaking feature documentary Plastic People investigates our addiction to plastic and the growing threat of microplastics on human health. Almost every bit of plastic ever made breaks down into “microplastics.” These microscopic particles drift in the air\, float in all bodies of water\, and mix into the soil\, becoming a permanent part of the environment. Now\, leading scientists are finding these particles in our bodies: organs\, blood\, brain tissue\, and even the placentas of new mothers. What is the impact of these invisible invaders on our health? And can anything be done about it? Acclaimed author and science journalist Ziya Tong takes a personal approach by visiting leading scientists around the world and undergoing experiments in her home\, on her food\, and her body while collaborating with award-winning director Ben Addelman in an urgent call to action for all of us to rethink our relationship with plastic. \nThis screening event is presented by White Pine Pictures in partnership with the Marbletown Environmental Conservation Commission and Rosendale Environmental Commission. \nPlastic People has been accompanied by a state-of-the-art impact campaign to empower viewers with knowledge and encourage positive change. As Ziya Tong remarks\, “The goal is to motivate people to action\, not to fear.” \nPlastic People: The Hidden Crisis of Microplastics is produced by award-winning WhitePine Pictures in association with TELUS independent; Written and Directed by BenAddelman and Co-Directed by Ziya Tong; Produced by Vanessa Dylyn and Stephen Paniccia; and Executive Produced by Peter Raymont\, Rick Smith and Steve Ord. The film is produced with the participation of The Canada Media Fund\, Telefilm Canada\, and Ontario Creates. \nFor more information contact Lisa Giannico\, Marbletown ECC\, at lisado212@gmail.com \nLearn More About This Event

SUMMARY:The "Coolest" Recycling Drive
DESCRIPTION:This program is affiliated with NYers for Cool Refrigerant Management.  Free drop off and recycling of refrigerant containing appliances on various dates and locations May 1st through 18th. Event Summary: \nBetween May 1 and May 18th\, residents of Ulster County and neighboring counties will have multiple opportunities to drop off their old refrigerant containing devices free of charge\, to be properly disposed of and recycled. There will be a primary drop off and short term storage site for appliances at the New Paltz ReUse and Recycling Center\, as well as an option to drop off at the Kingston Earth Fair on 5/11 at TR Gallo Park in Kingston (Rain Location: Hutton Brickyards). \nAt the end of the recycling drive the refrigerant chemicals will be safely extracted and recycled by local company Hudson Technologies\, and organizers invite people to join them to witness part of the Refrigerant extraction\, along with a presentation from New Yorkers for Cool Refrigerant Management on why this recycling effort is so important. The metal will be sold as scrap by the New Paltz ReUse and Recycling Center\, who will keep the profits from the sale. \nThe Ulster County Coolest Recycling Drive is organized by Sustainable Hudson Valley and New Yorkers for Cool Refrigerant Management\, with additional support and in-kind donations from the New Paltz ReUse and Recycling Center\, Hudson Technologies\, Climate Smart Kingston\, and New Yorkers for Clean Power. \nThe chemicals used as refrigerants are engineered and industrially produced to be able to transfer heat when trapped in a pressurized system. When these chemicals are released into the atmosphere\, they become greenhouse gasses that are thousands of times more powerful than carbon dioxide. A single air conditioner can hold up to 2 pounds of R410A\, which when released into the atmosphere\, over the next 20 years will act like almost 10\,000 pounds of carbon dioxide – almost as much emissions as driving an average car for a full year. \nTo highlight these most potent and least understood greenhouse gasses\, Sustainable Hudson Valley will be collecting appliances that use refrigerants free of charge and covering all expenses for them to be properly recycled. This service is available to everyone in Ulster County and the surrounding counties\, and covers items such as refrigerators\, window air conditioners\, dehumidifiers\, water coolers\, freezers and mini fridges. We will also accept canisters of refrigerants. Our goal is to help properly recycle refrigerant-containing appliances and call attention to the need for next-generation policies to cover costs of proper refrigerant reclamation\, training of technicians and proper disposal of refrigerants. \nCan’t make it to the event(s) but want to learn more about the safe disposal of air conditioners\, refrigerators\, and other refrigerant containing devices?
