SUMMARY:Plastic People: The Hidden Crisis of Microplastics
DESCRIPTION:The Marbletown Environmental Commission (ECC) & Rosendale Environmental Commission (REC) have partnered to present a special Earth Week screening and Q&A with community leaders and experts. A portion of ticket sales will go towards screening another environmental film in the future. \nThe screening will include a post-film panel and Q&A discussion featuring: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJen Metzger\, Ulster County Executive\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMarc Rider\, Executive Director Ulster County Resource Recovery Agency (UCRRA)\nMegan Wolff\, PhD.\, MPH\, Executive Director P-SNAP\, the Physician and Scientist Network Addressing Plastics and Health\n\nCost-saving solutions for addressing the challenges of toxic plastics will be offered by our local sponsors including: High Falls Food Co-op\, Second Nature Refillery\, and Climate Smart Tiffin Project. Visit their tables 6:30-7pm and following the Q&A. \nAbout the film: The ground-breaking feature documentary Plastic People investigates our addiction to plastic and the growing threat of microplastics on human health. Almost every bit of plastic ever made breaks down into “microplastics.” These microscopic particles drift in the air\, float in all bodies of water\, and mix into the soil\, becoming a permanent part of the environment. Now\, leading scientists are finding these particles in our bodies: organs\, blood\, brain tissue\, and even the placentas of new mothers. What is the impact of these invisible invaders on our health? And can anything be done about it? Acclaimed author and science journalist Ziya Tong takes a personal approach by visiting leading scientists around the world and undergoing experiments in her home\, on her food\, and her body while collaborating with award-winning director Ben Addelman in an urgent call to action for all of us to rethink our relationship with plastic. \nThis screening event is presented by White Pine Pictures in partnership with the Marbletown Environmental Conservation Commission and Rosendale Environmental Commission. \nPlastic People has been accompanied by a state-of-the-art impact campaign to empower viewers with knowledge and encourage positive change. As Ziya Tong remarks\, “The goal is to motivate people to action\, not to fear.” \nPlastic People: The Hidden Crisis of Microplastics is produced by award-winning WhitePine Pictures in association with TELUS independent; Written and Directed by BenAddelman and Co-Directed by Ziya Tong; Produced by Vanessa Dylyn and Stephen Paniccia; and Executive Produced by Peter Raymont\, Rick Smith and Steve Ord. The film is produced with the participation of The Canada Media Fund\, Telefilm Canada\, and Ontario Creates. \nFor more information contact Lisa Giannico\, Marbletown ECC\, at lisado212@gmail.com \nLearn More About This Event

SUMMARY:Ulster County Tiffin Project (SUNY NEW PALTZ)
DESCRIPTION:…. \nThursday\, November 14th\, 2024\n12:30 PM – 2:30 PM\nSUNY NEW PALTZ –  Coykendall Science Building\, Auditorium\n1 Hawk Dr\, New Paltz\, NY 12561\nThis special event is open to the general public – all are welcome! \nSingle-use packaging (like food take-out containers) are wasteful products that are used once\, for a very short period of time\, before being discarded in a landfill where they may take hundreds of years to “break down.” The environmental\, social\, and financial impacts of these wasteful single use products add up to make a big impact on our planet\, communities\, and local businesses. Luckily\, “low-waste living” and the “Bring Your Own” movement has inspired many people to make a difference by choosing to reuse when dining or shopping on-the-go. \nThis event is hosted by the SUNY New Paltz Department of Geography and Environmental Studies. Join the UCRRA Recycling Outreach Team\, New Paltz Climate Action Coalition & Climate Smart New Paltz for an engaging presentation and discussion about the benefits of reuse as a way to prevent pollution. At this special event\, participants will learn about the waste-climate connection and the lifecycle of some common single use food take-out containers. Come learn why choosing to reuse is not only better for our planet\, but may also be better for our health. \nAs a participant\, you will receive a FREE Tiffin (stainless steel\, reusable food containers)! Join us and together\, let’s unlock the full power and potential of reuse! Registration for this event is required. Class size may be limited. Please reserve your seat by completing the sign-up form and survey questions linked below. \nPlease note: While the entire event experience is up to 2 hours\, attendees can choose to stay for the Q&A or claim their tiffin at any point after the presentation has ended. Visit our tiffin distribution station to chat with event organizers and take the pledge to choose to reuse!\n\n\nAgenda:\n75 minutes presentation\n25 minutes Q&A\n20 minutes to take the pledge & claim your tiffin!\n\n…. \nSIGN UP NOW!…. \n\n\n\n…. \nAccessibility Statement: [SUNY New Paltz] strive[s] to host inclusive\, accessible events that enable all individuals\, including individuals with disabilities\, to engage fully. SUMMARY:Working with Worms & Seed Bombs (Gardiner Library)
DESCRIPTION:Working with Worms & Seed Bombs\nThursday\, June 20th 2024\n1:00 PM – 2:00 PM\nGardiner Public LibraryIn this interactive and activity-lead class for kids\, participants will visit two stations where they will learn about making compost with worms\, and about pollinators and how using finished compost can improve soil health. \nPart 1: Composting Worms\nParticipants will hear a brief introduction about what is composting and why it is an important way of protecting our environment. Then\, educators will guide students through an interactive reading of “Compost Stew” by author Mary McKenna Siddals. Participants will then be able to observe a live worm bin\, identify worms at each stage of their lifecycle\, learn about worm ecology\, and learn how to compost indoors using a worm bin. \nPart 2: Making Seed Bombs\nAt this station\, participants will learn that our favorite fruits\, vegetables\, nuts\, seeds\, and other foods rely on Pollinators. Pollinators pollinate 90% of all flowering plants\, but studies have shown that their populations have been declining in recent decades. Participants will create seed balls\, or seed bombs\, which are small clusters of compost\, clay\, and wildflower seeds that are designed to add pollinator habitats to urban landscapes\, neglected areas\, or wherever you’d like! All craft materials will be provided. \nThis FREE workshop is suitable for children ages 7 and up\, and parental supervision is advised. \nAccessibility:The Gardiner Library strives to ensure its building is fully accessible in support of our mission to provide valuable resources and services to all residents in Gardiner. This commitment includes making every effort to improve accessibility and working to acquire the funding necessary to make key improvements. A wheelchair accessible ramp is available to enter the Library. Accessible parking is available to the side of the building. It’s celebrated nationwide\, internationally\, and officially across New York Stare each year during the first full week of May. The goal of ICAW is for communities everywhere to raise public awareness about the many benefits of composting and how to make and use compost to regenerate soils. Visit the New York Compost Awareness Week page for more information about local programs\, events\, and initiatives. \n2024 Theme: COMPOST… Nature’s Climate Champion! Each year\, a new theme for ICAW is chosen. The 2024 theme was chosen collaboratively with the International Compost Alliance (ICA)\, which includes compost associations from around the world! The 2024 theme was chosen incorporating the collective focus on one of the initiatives of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)\, which is “Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.” \nThe 2024 theme best reflects the UN goal by highlighting the role compost plays in fighting climate change. Those roles include: \n\nDecreasing methane: Methane\, a greenhouse gas twenty-five times as powerful as carbon dioxide\, can be significantly reduced through the recycling of organics instead of their being landfilled.\nHelping with climate change mitigation: Compost offers a significant answer to climate change mitigation. Compost’s return to the soil serves as a “carbon bank\,” helping to store carbon thereby removing it from the atmosphere.\nReducing fertilizer inputs\, reducing the pollution created to manufacture those inputs.\nIncreasing resilience: Compost helps to increase resilience to the effects of climate change such as drought and extreme weather.\n\nThis year’s winner of the ICAW 2024 Poster Contest  is Ny Rindra Arison Malalaniaina. Ny Rindra lives in Antananarivo\, Madagascar and is a student in chemical and industrial process engineering.  \nShare This Event!

SUMMARY:The "Coolest" Recycling Drive
DESCRIPTION:This program is affiliated with NYers for Cool Refrigerant Management.  Free drop off and recycling of refrigerant containing appliances on various dates and locations May 1st through 18th. Event Summary: \nBetween May 1 and May 18th\, residents of Ulster County and neighboring counties will have multiple opportunities to drop off their old refrigerant containing devices free of charge\, to be properly disposed of and recycled. There will be a primary drop off and short term storage site for appliances at the New Paltz ReUse and Recycling Center\, as well as an option to drop off at the Kingston Earth Fair on 5/11 at TR Gallo Park in Kingston (Rain Location: Hutton Brickyards). \nAt the end of the recycling drive the refrigerant chemicals will be safely extracted and recycled by local company Hudson Technologies\, and organizers invite people to join them to witness part of the Refrigerant extraction\, along with a presentation from New Yorkers for Cool Refrigerant Management on why this recycling effort is so important. The metal will be sold as scrap by the New Paltz ReUse and Recycling Center\, who will keep the profits from the sale. \nThe Ulster County Coolest Recycling Drive is organized by Sustainable Hudson Valley and New Yorkers for Cool Refrigerant Management\, with additional support and in-kind donations from the New Paltz ReUse and Recycling Center\, Hudson Technologies\, Climate Smart Kingston\, and New Yorkers for Clean Power. \nThe chemicals used as refrigerants are engineered and industrially produced to be able to transfer heat when trapped in a pressurized system. When these chemicals are released into the atmosphere\, they become greenhouse gasses that are thousands of times more powerful than carbon dioxide. A single air conditioner can hold up to 2 pounds of R410A\, which when released into the atmosphere\, over the next 20 years will act like almost 10\,000 pounds of carbon dioxide – almost as much emissions as driving an average car for a full year. \nTo highlight these most potent and least understood greenhouse gasses\, Sustainable Hudson Valley will be collecting appliances that use refrigerants free of charge and covering all expenses for them to be properly recycled. This service is available to everyone in Ulster County and the surrounding counties\, and covers items such as refrigerators\, window air conditioners\, dehumidifiers\, water coolers\, freezers and mini fridges. We will also accept canisters of refrigerants. Our goal is to help properly recycle refrigerant-containing appliances and call attention to the need for next-generation policies to cover costs of proper refrigerant reclamation\, training of technicians and proper disposal of refrigerants. \nCan’t make it to the event(s) but want to learn more about the safe disposal of air conditioners\, refrigerators\, and other refrigerant containing devices?
