If you require any special accommodations or have questions about this program\, please contact Tanesia White\, Recycling Educator\, at TWHI@UCRRA.ORG or 845-336-3336. \nWe’re Celebrating Compost Awareness Week!\nAbout ICAW: International Compost Awareness Week  is the largest and most comprehensive education initiative of the compost industry. It’s celebrated nationwide\, internationally\, and officially across New York Stare each year during the first full week of May. The goal of ICAW is for communities everywhere to raise public awareness about the many benefits of composting and how to make and use compost to regenerate soils. Visit the New York Compost Awareness Week page for more information about local programs\, events\, and initiatives. \n2024 Theme: COMPOST… Nature’s Climate Champion! Each year\, a new theme for ICAW is chosen. The 2024 theme was chosen collaboratively with the International Compost Alliance (ICA)\, which includes compost associations from around the world! The 2024 theme was chosen incorporating the collective focus on one of the initiatives of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)\, which is “Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.” \nThe 2024 theme best reflects the UN goal by highlighting the role compost plays in fighting climate change. Those roles include: \n\nDecreasing methane: Methane\, a greenhouse gas twenty-five times as powerful as carbon dioxide\, can be significantly reduced through the recycling of organics instead of their being landfilled.\nHelping with climate change mitigation: Compost offers a significant answer to climate change mitigation. Compost’s return to the soil serves as a “carbon bank\,” helping to store carbon thereby removing it from the atmosphere.\nReducing fertilizer inputs\, reducing the pollution created to manufacture those inputs.\nIncreasing resilience: Compost helps to increase resilience to the effects of climate change such as drought and extreme weather.\n\nThis year’s winner of the ICAW 2024 Poster Contest  is Ny Rindra Arison Malalaniaina. Ny Rindra lives in Antananarivo\, Madagascar and is a student in chemical and industrial process engineering.  \nShare This Event!

SUMMARY:The "Coolest" Recycling Drive
DESCRIPTION:This program is affiliated with NYers for Cool Refrigerant Management.  Free drop off and recycling of refrigerant containing appliances on various dates and locations May 1st through 18th. Event Summary: \nBetween May 1 and May 18th\, residents of Ulster County and neighboring counties will have multiple opportunities to drop off their old refrigerant containing devices free of charge\, to be properly disposed of and recycled. There will be a primary drop off and short term storage site for appliances at the New Paltz ReUse and Recycling Center\, as well as an option to drop off at the Kingston Earth Fair on 5/11 at TR Gallo Park in Kingston (Rain Location: Hutton Brickyards). \nAt the end of the recycling drive the refrigerant chemicals will be safely extracted and recycled by local company Hudson Technologies\, and organizers invite people to join them to witness part of the Refrigerant extraction\, along with a presentation from New Yorkers for Cool Refrigerant Management on why this recycling effort is so important. The metal will be sold as scrap by the New Paltz ReUse and Recycling Center\, who will keep the profits from the sale. \nThe Ulster County Coolest Recycling Drive is organized by Sustainable Hudson Valley and New Yorkers for Cool Refrigerant Management\, with additional support and in-kind donations from the New Paltz ReUse and Recycling Center\, Hudson Technologies\, Climate Smart Kingston\, and New Yorkers for Clean Power. \nThe chemicals used as refrigerants are engineered and industrially produced to be able to transfer heat when trapped in a pressurized system. When these chemicals are released into the atmosphere\, they become greenhouse gasses that are thousands of times more powerful than carbon dioxide. A single air conditioner can hold up to 2 pounds of R410A\, which when released into the atmosphere\, over the next 20 years will act like almost 10\,000 pounds of carbon dioxide – almost as much emissions as driving an average car for a full year. \nTo highlight these most potent and least understood greenhouse gasses\, Sustainable Hudson Valley will be collecting appliances that use refrigerants free of charge and covering all expenses for them to be properly recycled. This service is available to everyone in Ulster County and the surrounding counties\, and covers items such as refrigerators\, window air conditioners\, dehumidifiers\, water coolers\, freezers and mini fridges. We will also accept canisters of refrigerants. Our goal is to help properly recycle refrigerant-containing appliances and call attention to the need for next-generation policies to cover costs of proper refrigerant reclamation\, training of technicians and proper disposal of refrigerants. \nCan’t make it to the event(s) but want to learn more about the safe disposal of air conditioners\, refrigerators\, and other refrigerant containing devices? We’re Celebrating Compost Awareness Week! \nAbout ICAW: International Compost Awareness Week  is the largest and most comprehensive education initiative of the compost industry. \n2023 Theme: For Healthier Soil\, Healthier Food…Compost! Each year\, a new theme for ICAW is chosen. The 2023 theme was chosen based on a serious world-wide issue that every nation\, unfortunately\, experiences: hunger. As part of the ICAW committee’s global discussion with our international partners around the world\, we spoke the same language\, and all wanted to promote a unified theme – aligning a topic important to each country while emphasizing our work with compost. The chosen 2023 theme best reflects the goal of focusing on how compost can have a role in helping feed the world\, by making our soil healthier which produces healthier food. How does compost help? By recycling organics into compost and using it on our farmlands we create healthy soils that produce healthier food and higher yields. It also reduces the need for fertilizer and pesticides\, improves water quality and conserves water\, as well as stores carbon in soil – helping to reduce climate change. Compost not only helps the environment but also helps to decrease food shortages experienced around the world. For Healthier Soil\, Healthier Food…Compost! \nThis year’s winner of the ICAW 2023 Poster Contest is Jun Qi Tan\, an illustrator and storyteller from Singapore. \nShare This Event!

SUMMARY:Informational Meeting - Municipal Food Scraps Hauling Project
DESCRIPTION:Informational Meeting:\nUCRRA Municipal Food Scraps Hauling Pilot Project\nMonday\, July 25th 2022\n10:00 AM – 11:30 AM\nVirtual via WEBEX Teleconferencing\nIn May of 2022 the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation announced a new grant program that will provide funding to projects in New York State that increase residential food scraps recycling programs. Organics recycling (composting) continues to be an important focus for UCRRA and the Agency is dedicated to facilitating effective and convenient programs for widespread participation in our composting services. \nUCRRA is actively developing a project proposal that could provide municipalities with FREE tools to launch and facilitate a residential food scraps collection program at Municipal Recycling Drop Off Centers\, as well as FREE use of the necessary equipment to deliver the collected material to our composting site. \nThe overarching goals of this project are to:\n• Foster inter-governmental relationships that maximize resource recovery\n• Maximize financial savings for municipalities via avoided MSW transport and disposal costs\n• Eliminate the logistical obstacles that prevent community-scale composting programs\n• Increase diversion of residential food scraps generated in Ulster County\n• Compliment the implementation of the local and state laws with organics recycling goals\n• Support the Agency’s zero waste goals\n• Demonstrate the environmental\, economic\, and social benefits of composting \nWe invite Town Supervisors\, Transfer Station Operators\, Climate Smart Task Force Members\, Town Board members/planners\, etc. to attend this informational webinar to learn about our project and how your town can partner with us and save an estimated $4\,420 per year. \nPlease follow the link below to register for this meeting.
