DESCRIPTION:Composting for Kids!\nFriday\, July 14th 2023\n10:00 AM – 11:00 AM\nHighland Public LibraryThis class will be hosted at the Highland Public Library and facilitated by UCRRA’s Recycling Educator\, Tanesia White.  Before seeing inside a live worm bin\, participants will hear a brief presentation about composting and the benefits of using compost in the garden. Participants will then be able to observe the worms\, identify worms at each stage of their lifecycle\, and learn how to compost with worms.  All craft materials will be provided. This FREE workshop is suitable for children ages 7 and up\, and parental supervision is advised. \nTO SIGN UP: Registrations open at 10:00am Friday\, June 23\, 2023 at Highland Public Library \nAccessibility: The parking lot in front of the building has accessible parking. From the parking lot to the sidewalk\, there is a wheelchair accessible ramp. The front door opens automatically upon entry and the library is all one level. DESCRIPTION:Working with Worms & Seed Bombs\nWednesday\, June 21st 2023\n3:00 PM – 4:00 PM\nEsopus Public LibraryIn this interactive and activity-lead class for kids\, participants will visit two stations where they will learn about making compost with worms\, and about pollinators and how using finished compost can improve soil health. \nPart 1: Composting Worms\nParticipants will hear a brief introduction about what is composting and why it is an important way of protecting our environment. Then\, educators will guide students through an interactive reading of “Compost Stew” by author Mary McKenna Siddals. Participants will then be able to observe a live worm bin\, identify worms at each stage of their lifecycle\, learn about worm ecology\, and learn how to compost indoors using a worm bin. \nPart 2: Making Seed Bombs\nAt this station\, participants will learn that our favorite fruits\, vegetables\, nuts\, seeds\, and other foods rely on Pollinators. Pollinators pollinate 90% of all flowering plants\, but studies have shown that their populations have been declining in recent decades. Participants will create seed balls\, or seed bombs\, which are small clusters of compost\, clay\, and wildflower seeds that are designed to add pollinator habitats to urban landscapes\, neglected areas\, or wherever you’d like! All craft materials will be provided. \nThis FREE workshop is suitable for children ages 7 and up\, and parental supervision is advised. \nAccessibility: The Library is fully wheelchair accessible. Our parking lot has four (4) parking spots with ‘improved accessibility’. Automatic doors at the main entrances\, along with an elevator\, provide access to the entire building. In the event that the elevator is out of order\, patrons may enter and exit via the lower level entrance. All rooms have been labeled with Braille and utilities placed at easy to reach heights. The service desk is equipped with a laptop and MS Word that allows staff to communicate with patrons with hearing/speech disabilities. The language interpretation feature in MS Word also allows communication between staff and patrons who primarily speak a language other than English. The Town of Esopus Library staff will work with any community member to accommodate them to the best of their capabilities\, and within the policies and procedures of the Library. All are welcome to our programs. DESCRIPTION:Upcycled Reusable Bags for Kids!\nFriday\, May 19th 2023\n4:00 PM – 5:15 PM\nWoodstock Public Library DistrictDid you know that Americans use 100 billion plastic bags per year\, which require 12 million barrels of oil to manufacture? Each single-use plastic bag is used for less than an hour\, but the effects last forever. Since plastic bags are lightweight\, they easily enter our environment as litter. Sea creatures can become entangled in them and mistake plastic bags for food\, resulting in toxic debris filling their stomachs. \nThis class will be hosted at the Woodstock Public Library and facilitated by the UCRRA Recycling Outreach Team. Participants will learn how to reduce plastic pollution in their everyday lives as well as the benefits of waste reduction. Participants will have the opportunity to upcycle their old t-shirt into a reusable eco-friendly bag for use on the go! Upcycling is a fun and creative way to repurpose old items into new\, useful items or works of art! Participants will hear a brief presentation about the impacts of our household waste and the importance of reducing\, reusing and recycling. Then\, educators will guide participants through a hands-on craft workshop to make an ornament using upcycled materials. All craft materials will be provided. Organics recycling (composting) continues to be an important focus for UCRRA and the Agency is dedicated to facilitating effective and convenient programs for widespread participation in our composting services. \nUCRRA is actively developing a project proposal that could provide municipalities with FREE tools to launch and facilitate a residential food scraps collection program at Municipal Recycling Drop Off Centers\, as well as FREE use of the necessary equipment to deliver the collected material to our composting site. \nThe overarching goals of this project are to:\n• Foster inter-governmental relationships that maximize resource recovery\n• Maximize financial savings for municipalities via avoided MSW transport and disposal costs\n• Eliminate the logistical obstacles that prevent community-scale composting programs\n• Increase diversion of residential food scraps generated in Ulster County\n• Compliment the implementation of the local and state laws with organics recycling goals\n• Support the Agency’s zero waste goals\n• Demonstrate the environmental\, economic\, and social benefits of composting \nWe invite Town Supervisors\, Transfer Station Operators\, Climate Smart Task Force Members\, Town Board members/planners\, etc. to attend this informational webinar to learn about our project and how your town can partner with us and save an estimated $4\,420 per year. \nPlease follow the link below to register for this meeting. DESCRIPTION:Upcycled Art for Kids: Oceans of Possibilities!\nWednesday\, June 15th 2022\n4:00 PM – 5:15 PM\nEsopus Public Library\, 128 Canal St. Port Ewen\, NY 12466\nUpcycling is a creative and fun way to reimagine unwanted items and turn our waste into new\, useful items or works of art! Not everything can be recycled\, but we can give new life to old items by reusing and upcycling them. The class will be hosted at the Library and facilitated by the UCRRA Recycling Outreach Team\, celebrating the library’s Summer Reading Program Series with the focus on Oceans of Possibilities. \nParticipants in this class will learn about the impact of plastic pollution on our oceans and wildlife\, and will create works of upcycled art from some common plastic objects. Join UCRRA in celebrating Plastic Free July and make sea creatures out of plastic! All craft materials will be provided. Parental supervision is necessary.
