SUMMARY:Composting for Kids! (Woodstock Library)
DESCRIPTION:Composting for Kids!\nFriday\, May 5th 2023\n4:00 PM – 5:30 PM\nWoodstock Public Library DistrictJoin the UCRRA Recycling Outreach Team in celebrating International Compost Awareness Week by learning about Vermicomposting and Making Seed Bombs! Seed bombs are small\, round clods of clay\, compost\, and wildflower seeds. Seed bombs can be tossed outdoors to encourage the growth of wildflowers and attract pollinators. Participants will get to make their own seed bombs using compost made by UCRRA! \nThis class will be hosted at the Woodstock Public Library and facilitated by the UCRRA Recycling Outreach Team.  Before seeing inside a live worm bin\, participants will hear a brief presentation about composting and the benefits of using compost in the garden. Participants will then be able to observe the worms\, identify worms at each stage of their lifecycle\, and learn how to compost with worms. Then\, educators will lead participants in a hands-on craft activity to make “Seed Bombs\,” which will incorporate the benefit of pollinators. All craft materials will be provided. This FREE workshop is suitable for children ages 7 and up\, and parental supervision is advised. \nTO SIGN UP: Class size is limited. It’s celebrated nationwide\, internationally\, and officially across New York Stare each year during the first full week of May. The goal of ICAW is for communities everywhere to raise public awareness about the many benefits of composting and how to make and use compost to regenerate soils. Each year\, a new theme for ICAW is chosen. The 2023 theme was chosen based on a serious world-wide issue that every nation\, unfortunately\, experiences: hunger. As part of the ICAW committee’s global discussion with our international partners around the world\, we spoke the same language\, and all wanted to promote a unified theme – aligning a topic important to each country while emphasizing our work with compost. The chosen 2023 theme best reflects the goal of focusing on how compost can have a role in helping feed the world\, by making our soil healthier which produces healthier food. How does compost help? By recycling organics into compost and using it on our farmlands we create healthy soils that produce healthier food and higher yields. It also reduces the need for fertilizer and pesticides\, improves water quality and conserves water\, as well as stores carbon in soil – helping to reduce climate change. DESCRIPTION:Informational Meeting:\nUCRRA Municipal Food Scraps Hauling Pilot Project\nMonday\, July 25th 2022\n10:00 AM – 11:30 AM\nVirtual via WEBEX Teleconferencing\nIn May of 2022 the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation announced a new grant program that will provide funding to projects in New York State that increase residential food scraps recycling programs. Organics recycling (composting) continues to be an important focus for UCRRA and the Agency is dedicated to facilitating effective and convenient programs for widespread participation in our composting services. \nUCRRA is actively developing a project proposal that could provide municipalities with FREE tools to launch and facilitate a residential food scraps collection program at Municipal Recycling Drop Off Centers\, as well as FREE use of the necessary equipment to deliver the collected material to our composting site. \nThe overarching goals of this project are to:\n• Foster inter-governmental relationships that maximize resource recovery\n• Maximize financial savings for municipalities via avoided MSW transport and disposal costs\n• Eliminate the logistical obstacles that prevent community-scale composting programs\n• Increase diversion of residential food scraps generated in Ulster County\n• Compliment the implementation of the local and state laws with organics recycling goals\n• Support the Agency’s zero waste goals\n• Demonstrate the environmental\, economic\, and social benefits of composting \nWe invite Town Supervisors\, Transfer Station Operators\, Climate Smart Task Force Members\, Town Board members/planners\, etc. to attend this informational webinar to learn about our project and how your town can partner with us and save an estimated $4\,420 per year. \nPlease follow the link below to register for this meeting. Plastic waste litters our environment\, pollutes our oceans\, and emerging science suggests plastic use can also expose us to chemicals that affect our health! This class will explain the impact of plastic pollution from ecological\, social\, and environmental issues\, and how we can drastically reduce the amount of single-use disposable plastics we use on a daily basis. \nThere are plastic alternatives to almost all of the common items we buy\, consume\, and discard. Simple swaps and new habits can help avoid needless packaging and lessen our impact on our environment. Learn how to recycle plastic correctly\, become a climate smart shopper\, save money\, and reduce waste by developing new habits and rethinking consumption. \nHow long could you go without using any plastic at all? The class will be hosted at the Library and facilitated by the UCRRA Recycling Outreach Team\, celebrating the library’s Summer Reading Program Series with the focus on Oceans of Possibilities. \nParticipants in this class will learn about the impact of plastic pollution on our oceans and wildlife\, and will create works of upcycled art from some common plastic objects.
