SUMMARY:Celebrate ICAW at the Stone Ridge Library
DESCRIPTION:UCRRA Celebrates International Compost Awareness Week!\n“Composting for Kids” with UCRRA\nTuesday\, May 6th 2025\n3:30 – 4:30 PM\nStone Ridge Library\n3700 Main St\, Stone Ridge\, NY\n\n\nIn this interactive and activity-lead class for kids\, participants will learn about making compost with worms\, and will get to make seed bombs to bring home! \nPart 1: Composting Worms\nParticipants will hear a brief introduction about composting and why it is an important way of protecting our environment. Then\, Recycling Educator eva Barnett will guide students through an interactive reading of “Compost Stew” by author Mary McKenna Siddals. Participants will then be able to observe a live worm bin\, identify worms at each stage of their lifecycle\, learn about worm ecology\, and learn how to compost indoors using a worm bin. \nPart 2: Making Seed Bombs\nAt this station\, participants will learn that our favorite fruits\, vegetables\, nuts\, seeds\, and other foods rely on Pollinators. Pollinators pollinate 90% of all flowering plants\, but studies have shown that their populations have been declining in recent decades. Participants will create seed balls\, or seed bombs\, which are small clusters of compost\, clay\, and wildflower seeds that are designed to add pollinator habitats to urban landscapes\, neglected areas\, or wherever you’d like! All craft materials will be provided. \nThis FREE workshop is suitable for children ages 7 and up\, and parental supervision is advised. Please register here as space is limited. \n\n\n\nWhether you’re a gardener\, sustainability advocate\, or simply curious about how composting supports healthy ecosystems\, this presentation will leave you motivated to make a difference! SUMMARY:The "Coolest" Recycling Drive
DESCRIPTION:This program is affiliated with NYers for Cool Refrigerant Management.  Free drop off and recycling of refrigerant containing appliances on various dates at the Town of New Paltz Reuse & Recycling Center:   \n\nTuesday\, May 6th 2025 from 9:00am – 1:00pm\nTuesday\, May 20th 2025 from 12:00pm – 4:00pm\nSaturday\, May 24th 2025 from 9:00am – 1:00pm\nEvent Summary: \nThe Ulster County Coolest Recycling Drive is organized by Sustainable Hudson Valley and New Yorkers for Cool Refrigerant Management\, with additional support and in-kind donations from the New Paltz ReUse and Recycling Center\, Climate Smart Kingston\, and New Yorkers for Clean Power. Between May 6th and May 24th\, residents of Ulster County (and neighboring counties) will have multiple opportunities to drop off their old refrigerant containing devices free of charge\, to be properly disposed of and recycled. The primary drop off and short term storage site for appliances will be the Town of New Paltz ReUse and Recycling Center (open to all)\, as well as an option for City of Kingston residents to drop off at the Kingston Earth Fair on 5/10 at TR Gallo Park in Kingston. \nAt the end of the recycling drive the refrigerant chemicals will be safely extracted and sent for reclamation by JGS Recycling and Hauling. This program covers items such as refrigerators\, window air conditioners\, dehumidifiers\, water coolers\, freezers and mini fridges.  Refrigerant canisters are also accepted. \nWhy Safe Disposal Matters: \nThe program goal is to help properly recycle refrigerant-containing appliances and call attention to the need for next-generation policies to cover costs of proper refrigerant reclamation\, training of technicians and proper disposal of refrigerants. The chemicals used as refrigerants are engineered and industrially produced to be able to transfer heat when trapped in a pressurized system. When these chemicals are released into the atmosphere\, they become greenhouse gasses that are thousands of times more powerful than carbon dioxide. A single air conditioner can hold up to 2 pounds of R410A\, which when released into the atmosphere\, over the next 20 years will act like almost 10\,000 pounds of carbon dioxide – similar to the emissions as driving a car for a full year. \nCan’t make it to the event(s) but want to learn more about the safe disposal of air conditioners\, refrigerators\, and other refrigerant containing devices? SUMMARY:Plastic People: The Hidden Crisis of Microplastics
DESCRIPTION:The Marbletown Environmental Commission (ECC) & Rosendale Environmental Commission (REC) have partnered to present a special Earth Week screening and Q&A with community leaders and experts. A portion of ticket sales will go towards screening another environmental film in the future. \nThe screening will include a post-film panel and Q&A discussion featuring: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJen Metzger\, Ulster County Executive\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMarc Rider\, Executive Director Ulster County Resource Recovery Agency (UCRRA)\nMegan Wolff\, PhD.\, MPH\, Executive Director P-SNAP\, the Physician and Scientist Network Addressing Plastics and Health\n\nCost-saving solutions for addressing the challenges of toxic plastics will be offered by our local sponsors including: High Falls Food Co-op\, Second Nature Refillery\, and Climate Smart Tiffin Project. Visit their tables 6:30-7pm and following the Q&A. \nAbout the film: The ground-breaking feature documentary Plastic People investigates our addiction to plastic and the growing threat of microplastics on human health. Almost every bit of plastic ever made breaks down into “microplastics.” These microscopic particles drift in the air\, float in all bodies of water\, and mix into the soil\, becoming a permanent part of the environment. Now\, leading scientists are finding these particles in our bodies: organs\, blood\, brain tissue\, and even the placentas of new mothers. What is the impact of these invisible invaders on our health? And can anything be done about it? Acclaimed author and science journalist Ziya Tong takes a personal approach by visiting leading scientists around the world and undergoing experiments in her home\, on her food\, and her body while collaborating with award-winning director Ben Addelman in an urgent call to action for all of us to rethink our relationship with plastic. \nThis screening event is presented by White Pine Pictures in partnership with the Marbletown Environmental Conservation Commission and Rosendale Environmental Commission. \nPlastic People has been accompanied by a state-of-the-art impact campaign to empower viewers with knowledge and encourage positive change. As Ziya Tong remarks\, “The goal is to motivate people to action\, not to fear.” \nPlastic People: The Hidden Crisis of Microplastics is produced by award-winning WhitePine Pictures in association with TELUS independent; Written and Directed by BenAddelman and Co-Directed by Ziya Tong; Produced by Vanessa Dylyn and Stephen Paniccia; and Executive Produced by Peter Raymont\, Rick Smith and Steve Ord. The film is produced with the participation of The Canada Media Fund\, Telefilm Canada\, and Ontario Creates. \nFor more information contact Lisa Giannico\, Marbletown ECC\, at lisado212@gmail.com \nLearn More About This Event

SUMMARY:FREE Tree & Shrub Give-A-Way at UCRRA
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, April 19th\, residents who drop off electronics for recycling and/or residents that pick up an order of bagged compost will receive a free tree sapling/shrub as our gift to you to celebrate Earth Day! Please note: tree saplings/shrubs will be distributed while supplies last\, with limited inventory available\, and several different options to choose from! \nThis program is made possible by the Ulster County Soil & Water Conservation District. The organization shared excess inventory from their Annual Sale. While we cannot guarantee which tree/shrub species will be available; the giveaway may include the following species: \nBlack Chokeberry*\,  Silky Dogwood\, Pin Oak\, Sugar Maple\, Tulip Polar\, American Hazlenut\, Arrowwood Viburnum \n*All species are native varieties: saplings may range in size from 6 inches to 2 feet. \nAccessibility: This is an outdoor event. On arrival at the Main Office parking area\, ask an attendant about the tree distribution station. Residents may park in designated parking areas to collect a tree/shrub. We can also accommodate curbside service.  \nInstructions for Planting Trees & Shrubs\nSource: United States Composting Council (USCC) Consumer Compost Use Program \nEstablishment: Excavate a planting hole slightly shallower and 2 to 3 times the width of the root ball or container. Set the root ball on firm soil so that the top of the root ball sits slightly higher than the final grade. Uniformly blend compost with the excavated soil at one (1) part by volume compost to 2-3 parts by volume soil. Compost with higher amounts of salts and nutrients should be used at lower rates (e.g. 1:3 or 1:4 parts compost to soil). Backfill and firm the soil blend around the root ball within the planting hole. Always water thoroughly after planting. It should be noted that whenever possible\, trees and shrubs should be planted in a mass planting bed\, where multiple plants are established in a larger amended bed. This technique allows for greater planting success. Lower compost application rates should be used for salt sensitive crops (e.g.\, conifers)\, or where composts possessing higher salt and nutrient levels are used\, while higher application rates may be used for plants that require greater amounts of fertility. \nMaintenance: Apply a coarser compost mulch (1” – 2” screened) over the garden bed to conserve moisture\, for weed suppression\nand/or for aesthetic purposes. Note: The nutrients contained in compost should be considered when applying fertilization. They\nwill typically offset plant nutrient requirements\, thereby potentially reducing fertilizer application rates. \nCompost has many horticultural benefits and uses. \n\nCompost adds a slow release of nutrients\nCompost adds beneficial soil organisms\, reducing the need to use chemical pesticides\nCompost aids in suppressing plant disease pathogens\, reducing the need to use chemical fertilizers\nCompost increases moisture retention\, so you don’t need to add water to garden beds as frequently\nCompost helps improve soil structure\, porosity\, and density\nCompost makes any soil easier to work and cultivate\n\nDisclaimer: The USCC makes no warranties regarding UCRRA’s Compost product or its contents\, quality\, or suitability for any particular use. By the end of the year\, the Environmental Protection Agency was created. And by 1990\, Earth Day was celebrated internationally by 140 countries. \nAccording to National Geographic\, roughly 15 billion trees are cut down each year around the globe. Trees absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen\, essential for life on Earth! Trees also provide shelter and food for wildlife and help cool the climate. By taking part in activities like planting trees\, and using compost\, we can all do our part to create a healthier\, more sustainable planet. \nRecycled Paper Facts: \nBy weight\, more paper is recovered for recycling in America than all other materials combined (except for steel). In 1988\, recovered paper made up about 25 percent of the raw materials used at US paper mills.  That figure rose to 36.3 percent in 1999 and has remained around 36-37 percent through 2007. More than 3/4 of America’s paper mills use recovered fiber to make some or all of their products. Approximately 140 mills use recovered paper exclusively. As a result\, virtually all types of paper products contain some recycled fiber. Since 1994\, significantly more paper has been recovered in America than landfilled.
