SUMMARY:Eco-Friendly Home! DIY Cleaners & More
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, October 4th\, 2023\n6:00 PM – 7:00 PM\nShawangunk Town Hall Community Room\n14 Central Ave\, Wallkill\, NY 12589\nWe all have favorite household products that we rely on because they work well. It could be anything from a preferred cleaner to a preferred toothpaste. Some of the brands and products we’ve grown to love contain chemicals that don’t love us back. Bleach\, ammonia\, and oven cleaners are examples of chemical cleaning agents that can irritate our skin\, eyes\, and respiratory tract. Some beauty products also contain fragrances and chemicals whose health risks are still unknown. Many of these products are also classified as Hazardous Waste and require safe disposal. \nAlthough eco-friendly alternatives are becoming more widely available in stores\, you can easily make your own at home with very simple and low-cost ingredients! Curious? Join us at our Eco-Friendly Home workshop to learn how to make your own products that are better for the environment\, your health\, and your wallet! \nThis class will be hosted in-person at the Shawangunk Town Hall by Tanesia White\, in collaboration with the Wallkill Public Library. After a short presentation with several demos\, participants will leave with their own recipes and DIY Products. All class materials are provided. \nSign up for this event is now closed! Please email kosullivan@rcls.org. \n\nAccessibility: This event will take place in the community room of Shawangunk Town Hall. Parking is available in front of the entrance as well as in the library and Town Hall lots\, located on either side of the building. The door to the community room opens automatically and there is a lift directly inside the building that will take participants down to the community room. Restrooms are located down a short hallway just past the community room. \nWe strive to offer equal program opportunities. Educational resources in Spanish are available by request. SUMMARY:Just Eat It: A Food Waste Story
DESCRIPTION:UCRRA & the Shandaken Conservation Advisory Council have partnered with the Phoenicia Playhouse Community Theatre for this community screening of the educational documentary Just Eat It: A Food Waste Story. The 1:00 PM Sunday showing on August 20th\, 2023 will feature FREE ADMISSION\, sponsored by the Ulster County Resource Recovery Agency. We all love food. As a culture\, we devour countless cooking shows\, culinary magazines and foodie blogs… So how could we possibly be throwing nearly 50% of it in the trash? \n\nAbout the Film:\n\nFilmmakers and food lovers Jen and Grant dive into the issue of waste from farm\, through retail\, all the way to the back of their own fridge. After catching a glimpse of the billions of dollars of good food that is tossed each year in North America\, they pledge to quit grocery shopping cold turkey and survive only on foods that would otherwise be thrown away. In a nation where one in 10 people is food insecure\, the images they capture of squandered groceries are both shocking and strangely compelling. But as Grant’s addictive personality turns full tilt towards food rescue\, the ‘thrill of the find’ has unexpected consequences. Featuring interviews with TED lecturer\, author and activist Tristram Stuart and acclaimed author Jonathan Bloom\, Just Eat It looks at our systemic obsession with expiry dates\, perfect produce and portion sizes\, and reveals the core of this seemingly insignificant issue that is having devastating consequences around the globe. Just Eat It brings farmers\, retailers\, inspiring organizations\, and consumers to the table in a cinematic story that is equal parts education and delicious entertainment.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDetails\n\nRunning Time: Educational cut 50 min\nDirector: Grant Baldwin\nProducer: Jenny Rustemeyer\nExecutive Producers: Melanie Wood (Stranger Productions)\, Murray Battle (Knowledge Network)\n\nAwards\n\nBest Documentary – Leo Awards\nBest Documentary Director – Leo Awards\nBest Documentary Musical Score – Leo Awards\nAudience Award – CPH:DOX\nVIFF Impact Award – Vancouver International Film Festival\nEmerging Canadian Filmmaker & Top 20 Audience Choice – Hot Docs\nPeople’s Choice Award – Calgary International Film Festival\nBest Canadian Documentary – Edmonton International Film Festival\nMust See BC Winner & Runner Up Most Popular Documentary – Vancouver International Film Festival\nBest Canadian Feature – Planet in Focus\n2015 Festival Choice – One Earth Film Festival\nBest Environmental Film – Sedona International Film Festival\nGrand Jury Prize – Yale Environmental (EFFY)\nBest Documentary – Lake Erie Arts and Film Festival\nTop 20 Audience Choice – IDFA\nTop 20 Audience Picks – Hot Docs\nRunner Up Most Popular Documentary – Vancouver International Film Festival\nFinalist – CINE Golden Eagle Award (Nonfiction Content\, Feature – Environment and Science)\nFinalist – James Beard Awards (Documentary)\nFinalist – Scripps Howard Award for Environmental Reporting

SUMMARY:Working with Worms & Seed Bombs (Esopus Library)
DESCRIPTION:Working with Worms & Seed Bombs\nWednesday\, June 21st 2023\n3:00 PM – 4:00 PM\nEsopus Public LibraryIn this interactive and activity-lead class for kids\, participants will visit two stations where they will learn about making compost with worms\, and about pollinators and how using finished compost can improve soil health. \nPart 1: Composting Worms\nParticipants will hear a brief introduction about what is composting and why it is an important way of protecting our environment. Then\, educators will guide students through an interactive reading of “Compost Stew” by author Mary McKenna Siddals. Participants will then be able to observe a live worm bin\, identify worms at each stage of their lifecycle\, learn about worm ecology\, and learn how to compost indoors using a worm bin. \nPart 2: Making Seed Bombs\nAt this station\, participants will learn that our favorite fruits\, vegetables\, nuts\, seeds\, and other foods rely on Pollinators. Pollinators pollinate 90% of all flowering plants\, but studies have shown that their populations have been declining in recent decades. Participants will create seed balls\, or seed bombs\, which are small clusters of compost\, clay\, and wildflower seeds that are designed to add pollinator habitats to urban landscapes\, neglected areas\, or wherever you’d like! All craft materials will be provided. \nThis FREE workshop is suitable for children ages 7 and up\, and parental supervision is advised. \nAccessibility: The Library is fully wheelchair accessible. Our parking lot has four (4) parking spots with ‘improved accessibility’. Automatic doors at the main entrances\, along with an elevator\, provide access to the entire building. In the event that the elevator is out of order\, patrons may enter and exit via the lower level entrance. All rooms have been labeled with Braille and utilities placed at easy to reach heights. The service desk is equipped with a laptop and MS Word that allows staff to communicate with patrons with hearing/speech disabilities. The language interpretation feature in MS Word also allows communication between staff and patrons who primarily speak a language other than English. The Town of Esopus Library staff will work with any community member to accommodate them to the best of their capabilities\, and within the policies and procedures of the Library. All are welcome to our programs. It is the responsibility of the parent/guardian of any particular child to help with the child’s participation and behavior. \nUCRRA strives to offer equal program opportunities. Educational resources in Spanish are available by request. If you require any special accommodations or have questions about this program\, please contact Tanesia White\, Recycling Educator\, at TWHI@UCRRA.ORG or 845-336-3336. \nSign Up Coming Soon!Share This Event!

It’s celebrated nationwide\, internationally\, and officially across New York Stare each year during the first full week of May. The goal of ICAW is for communities everywhere to raise public awareness about the many benefits of composting and how to make and use compost to regenerate soils. Visit the New York Compost Awareness Week page for more information about local programs\, events\, and initiatives. \n2023 Theme: For Healthier Soil\, Healthier Food…Compost! Each year\, a new theme for ICAW is chosen. The 2023 theme was chosen based on a serious world-wide issue that every nation\, unfortunately\, experiences: hunger. As part of the ICAW committee’s global discussion with our international partners around the world\, we spoke the same language\, and all wanted to promote a unified theme – aligning a topic important to each country while emphasizing our work with compost. The chosen 2023 theme best reflects the goal of focusing on how compost can have a role in helping feed the world\, by making our soil healthier which produces healthier food. How does compost help? By recycling organics into compost and using it on our farmlands we create healthy soils that produce healthier food and higher yields. It also reduces the need for fertilizer and pesticides\, improves water quality and conserves water\, as well as stores carbon in soil – helping to reduce climate change. Compost not only helps the environment but also helps to decrease food shortages experienced around the world. For Healthier Soil\, Healthier Food…Compost! \nThis year’s winner of the ICAW 2023 Poster Contest is Jun Qi Tan\, an illustrator and storyteller from Singapore. \nShare This Story!

SUMMARY:*EVENT CANCELLED* Upcycled Reusable Bags for Kids!
DESCRIPTION:Upcycled Reusable Bags for Kids!\nFriday\, May 19th 2023\n4:00 PM – 5:15 PM\nWoodstock Public Library DistrictDid you know that Americans use 100 billion plastic bags per year\, which require 12 million barrels of oil to manufacture? Each single-use plastic bag is used for less than an hour\, but the effects last forever. Since plastic bags are lightweight\, they easily enter our environment as litter. Sea creatures can become entangled in them and mistake plastic bags for food\, resulting in toxic debris filling their stomachs. \nThis class will be hosted at the Woodstock Public Library and facilitated by the UCRRA Recycling Outreach Team. Participants will learn how to reduce plastic pollution in their everyday lives as well as the benefits of waste reduction. Participants will have the opportunity to upcycle their old t-shirt into a reusable eco-friendly bag for use on the go! Upcycling is a fun and creative way to repurpose old items into new\, useful items or works of art! This FREE workshop is suitable for children ages 7 and up\, and parental supervision is advised. \nPlease bring an old t-shirt to be upcycled! \nAccessibility: A wheelchair accessible ramp is available to enter the main library. Accessible parking is available to the side of the building\, and additional parking spots are available across the street. This program will take place upstairs\, where there is no elevator or lift. Masks and social distancing are not required at this time\, but they are recommended. \nWe strive to offer equal program opportunities. Educational resources in Spanish are available by request. If you require any special accommodations or have questions about this program\, please contact Tanesia White\, Recycling Educator\, at TWHI@UCRRA.ORG or 845-336-3336.
