It’s celebrated nationwide\, internationally\, and officially across New York State each year during the first full week of May. The goal of ICAW is for communities everywhere to raise public awareness about the many benefits of composting and how to make and use compost to regenerate soils. Visit the New York Compost Awareness Week page for more information about local programs\, events\, and initiatives \n2024 Theme: COMPOST… Nature’s Climate Champion! Each year\, a new theme for ICAW is chosen. The 2024 theme was chosen collaboratively with the International Compost Alliance (ICA)\, incorporating the collective focus on one of the initiatives of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)\, which is “Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts.” \nThe 2024 theme best reflects the UN goal by highlighting the role compost plays in fighting climate change. Those roles include: \n\nDecreasing methane: Methane\, a greenhouse gas twenty-five times as powerful as carbon dioxide\, can be significantly reduced through the recycling of organics instead of their being landfilled.\nHelping with climate change mitigation: Compost offers a significant answer to climate change mitigation. Compost’s return to the soil serves as a “carbon bank\,” helping to store carbon thereby removing it from the atmosphere.\nReducing fertilizer inputs\, reducing the pollution created to manufacture those inputs.\nIncreasing resilience: Compost helps to increase resilience to the effects of climate change such as drought and extreme weather.\n\nThis year’s winner of the ICAW 2024 Poster Contest  is Ny Rindra Arison Malalaniaina. Ny Rindra lives in Antananarivo\, Madagascar and is a student in chemical and industrial process engineering.  \nShare This Story!

SUMMARY:The "Coolest" Recycling Drive
DESCRIPTION:This program is affiliated with NYers for Cool Refrigerant Management.  Free drop off and recycling of refrigerant containing appliances on various dates and locations May 1st through 18th. Event Summary: \nBetween May 1 and May 18th\, residents of Ulster County and neighboring counties will have multiple opportunities to drop off their old refrigerant containing devices free of charge\, to be properly disposed of and recycled. There will be a primary drop off and short term storage site for appliances at the New Paltz ReUse and Recycling Center\, as well as an option to drop off at the Kingston Earth Fair on 5/11 at TR Gallo Park in Kingston (Rain Location: Hutton Brickyards). \nAt the end of the recycling drive the refrigerant chemicals will be safely extracted and recycled by local company Hudson Technologies\, and organizers invite people to join them to witness part of the Refrigerant extraction\, along with a presentation from New Yorkers for Cool Refrigerant Management on why this recycling effort is so important. The metal will be sold as scrap by the New Paltz ReUse and Recycling Center\, who will keep the profits from the sale. \nThe Ulster County Coolest Recycling Drive is organized by Sustainable Hudson Valley and New Yorkers for Cool Refrigerant Management\, with additional support and in-kind donations from the New Paltz ReUse and Recycling Center\, Hudson Technologies\, Climate Smart Kingston\, and New Yorkers for Clean Power. \nThe chemicals used as refrigerants are engineered and industrially produced to be able to transfer heat when trapped in a pressurized system. When these chemicals are released into the atmosphere\, they become greenhouse gasses that are thousands of times more powerful than carbon dioxide. A single air conditioner can hold up to 2 pounds of R410A\, which when released into the atmosphere\, over the next 20 years will act like almost 10\,000 pounds of carbon dioxide – almost as much emissions as driving an average car for a full year. \nTo highlight these most potent and least understood greenhouse gasses\, Sustainable Hudson Valley will be collecting appliances that use refrigerants free of charge and covering all expenses for them to be properly recycled. This service is available to everyone in Ulster County and the surrounding counties\, and covers items such as refrigerators\, window air conditioners\, dehumidifiers\, water coolers\, freezers and mini fridges. We will also accept canisters of refrigerants. Our goal is to help properly recycle refrigerant-containing appliances and call attention to the need for next-generation policies to cover costs of proper refrigerant reclamation\, training of technicians and proper disposal of refrigerants. \nCan’t make it to the event(s) but want to learn more about the safe disposal of air conditioners\, refrigerators\, and other refrigerant containing devices? SUMMARY:Earth Day at UCRRA
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, April 20th\, residents who drop off electronics for recycling and/or residents that pick up an order of bagged compost will receive a free tree sapling/shrub as our gift to you to celebrate Earth Day! Please note: tree saplings/shrubs will be distributed while supplies last\, with limited inventory available\, and several different options to choose from! \nThis program is made possible by the Ulster County Soil & Water Conservation District. The organization has shared excess inventory from their Annual Sale. While we cannot guarantee which tree/shrub species will be available; the giveaway may include the following species: \nBlack Chokeberry* (1)\,  Silky Dogwood (2)\, Pin Oak (3)\, Sugar Maple (4)\, Tulip Polar (5)\, American Hazlenut (6)\, Arrowwood Viburnum (7) \n*Species are numbered as they appear in the attached photo. All species are native varieties: saplings may range in size from 6 inches to 2 feet. \nAccessibility: This is an outdoor event. On arrival at the Main Office parking area\, ask an attendant about the tree distribution station. Residents may park in designated parking areas to collect a tree/shrub. We can also accommodate curbside service.  \nInstructions for Planting Trees & Shrubs\nSource: United States Composting Council (USCC) Consumer Compost Use Program \nEstablishment: Excavate a planting hole slightly shallower and 2 to 3 times the width of the root ball or container. Set the root ball on firm soil so that the top of the root ball sits slightly higher than the final grade. Uniformly blend compost with the excavated soil at one (1) part by volume compost to 2-3 parts by volume soil. Compost with higher amounts of salts and nutrients should be used at lower rates (e.g. 1:3 or 1:4 parts compost to soil). Backfill and firm the soil blend around the root ball within the planting hole. Always water thoroughly after planting. It should be noted that whenever possible\, trees and shrubs should be planted in a mass planting bed\, where multiple plants are established in a larger amended bed. This technique allows for greater planting success. Lower compost application rates should be used for salt sensitive crops (e.g.\, conifers)\, or where composts possessing higher salt and nutrient levels are used\, while higher application rates may be used for plants that require greater amounts of fertility. \nMaintenance: Apply a coarser compost mulch (1” – 2” screened) over the garden bed to conserve moisture\, for weed suppression\nand/or for aesthetic purposes. Note: The nutrients contained in compost should be considered when applying fertilization. They\nwill typically offset plant nutrient requirements\, thereby potentially reducing fertilizer application rates. \nCompost has many horticultural benefits and uses. \n\nCompost adds a slow release of nutrients\nCompost adds beneficial soil organisms\, reducing the need to use chemical pesticides\nCompost aids in suppressing plant disease pathogens\, reducing the need to use chemical fertilizers\nCompost increases moisture retention\, so you don’t need to add water to garden beds as frequently\nCompost helps improve soil structure\, porosity\, and density\nCompost makes any soil easier to work and cultivate\n\nDisclaimer: The USCC makes no warranties regarding UCRRA’s Compost product or its contents\, quality\, or suitability for any particular use. Please refer to the individual producer’s product label for specific use instructions. \nLearn more by viewing the UCRRA Rack Card Tree & Shrub \nLearn more about the Agency’s Certified Compost by viewing the UCRRA Brochure STA Program \nWe’re Celebrating Earth Day! \nThe first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970\, when a U.S. Senator organized a national demonstration about environmental issues and environmental conservation. By the end of the year\, the Environmental Protection Agency was created. And by 1990\, Earth Day was celebrated internationally by 140 countries. \nAccording to National Geographic\, roughly 15 billion trees are cut down each year around the globe. Trees absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen\, essential for life on Earth! Trees also provide shelter and food for wildlife and help cool the climate. By taking part in activities like planting trees\, and using compost\, we can all do our part to create a healthier\, more sustainable planet. \nRecycled Paper Facts: \nBy weight\, more paper is recovered for recycling in America than all other materials combined (except for steel). In 1988\, recovered paper made up about 25 percent of the raw materials used at US paper mills.  That figure rose to 36.3 percent in 1999 and has remained around 36-37 percent through 2007. More than 3/4 of America’s paper mills use recovered fiber to make some or all of their products. Approximately 140 mills use recovered paper exclusively. As a result\, virtually all types of paper products contain some recycled fiber. Since 1994\, significantly more paper has been recovered in America than landfilled. SUMMARY:Just Eat It: A Food Waste Story
DESCRIPTION:_ \nTuesday\,March 19th\, 2024\n3:30 PM – 5:00 PM\nSUNY New Paltz\nCSB (Coykendall Science Building) Auditorium\nSign Up Now_ \nThis FREE event is a collaboration between the Ulster County Resource Recovery Agency and Brett Barry\, SUNY New Paltz Professor. The film is approximately an hour long and will include an introduction to UCRRA services as well as a Q&A session with UCRRA’s Recycling Educator\, Tanesia White at the end. FREE resources on food waste reduction and composting will be available. If you have any questions\, please reach out to twhi@ucrra.org. \nWe all love food. As a culture\, we devour countless cooking shows\, culinary magazines and foodie blogs… So how could we possibly be throwing nearly 50% of it in the trash? \n_ \n\nAbout the Film:\n\nFilmmakers and food lovers Jen and Grant dive into the issue of waste from farm\, through retail\, all the way to the back of their own fridge. After catching a glimpse of the billions of dollars of good food that is tossed each year in North America\, they pledge to quit grocery shopping cold turkey and survive only on foods that would otherwise be thrown away. In a nation where one in 10 people is food insecure\, the images they capture of squandered groceries are both shocking and strangely compelling. But as Grant’s addictive personality turns full tilt towards food rescue\, the ‘thrill of the find’ has unexpected consequences. Featuring interviews with TED lecturer\, author and activist Tristram Stuart and acclaimed author Jonathan Bloom\, Just Eat It looks at our systemic obsession with expiry dates\, perfect produce and portion sizes\, and reveals the core of this seemingly insignificant issue that is having devastating consequences around the globe. Just Eat It brings farmers\, retailers\, inspiring organizations\, and consumers to the table in a cinematic story that is equal parts education and delicious entertainment.\n\n\n\n\n_ \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n_ \nDetails\n\nRunning Time: Educational cut 50 min\nDirector: Grant Baldwin\nProducer: Jenny Rustemeyer\nExecutive Producers: Melanie Wood (Stranger Productions)\, Murray Battle (Knowledge Network)\n\nAwards\n\nBest Documentary – Leo Awards\nBest Documentary Director – Leo Awards\nBest Documentary Musical Score – Leo Awards\nAudience Award – CPH:DOX\nVIFF Impact Award – Vancouver International Film Festival\nEmerging Canadian Filmmaker & Top 20 Audience Choice – Hot Docs\nPeople’s Choice Award – Calgary International Film Festival\nBest Canadian Documentary – Edmonton International Film Festival\nMust See BC Winner & Runner Up Most Popular Documentary – Vancouver International Film Festival\nBest Canadian Feature – Planet in Focus\n2015 Festival Choice – One Earth Film Festival\nBest Environmental Film – Sedona International Film Festival\nGrand Jury Prize – Yale Environmental (EFFY)\nBest Documentary – Lake Erie Arts and Film Festival\nTop 20 Audience Choice – IDFA\nTop 20 Audience Picks – Hot Docs\nRunner Up Most Popular Documentary – Vancouver International Film Festival\nFinalist – CINE Golden Eagle Award (Nonfiction Content\, Feature – Environment and Science)\nFinalist – James Beard Awards (Documentary)\nFinalist – Scripps Howard Award for Environmental Reporting

It could be anything from a preferred cleaner to a preferred toothpaste. Some of the brands and products we’ve grown to love contain chemicals that don’t love us back. Bleach\, ammonia\, and oven cleaners are examples of chemical cleaning agents that can irritate our skin\, eyes\, and respiratory tract. Some beauty products also contain fragrances and chemicals whose health risks are still unknown. Many of these products are also classified as Hazardous Waste and require safe disposal. \nAlthough eco-friendly alternatives are becoming more widely available in stores\, you can easily make your own at home with very simple and low-cost ingredients! Curious?
