INSTRUCTIONS

In New York State, it is illegal to throw rechargeable batteries into the trash. The NYS Rechargeable Battery Recycling Act was signed into law December 10, 2010. The Law requires manufacturers of rechargeable batteries to fund the collection and recycling of rechargeable batteries in NYS. Retailers that sell rechargeable batteries OR products containing rechargeable batteries must accept used rechargeable batteries from NYS consumers. They must also post in-store signage notifying consumers about the disposal ban.

The improper disposal of rechargeable batteries leads to injuries, fires, and explosions in solid waste facilities. PLEASE DO NOT put batteries in the recycling bin. While UCRRA does NOT accept rechargeable batteries, there are ample opportunities to drop off used rechargeable batteries as described below.

Many local retailers that sell rechargeable batteries (Target, Staples, Lowes, Home Depot, Walmart, Harbor Frieght, etc.) will accept rechargeable batteries for recycling per state law.
