Outreach & Education
We believe we can make our neighborhoods more environmentally sustainable communities through recycling, proper disposal, and by preventing litter. Property managers and landlords play an important role in educating their tenants about recycling and proper disposal – and it’s in everyone’s best interest to reduce litter, reduce move-out costs, avoid junking/illegal dumping, and helping to improve our communities. The Recycling Outreach Team offers many programs and services in pursuit of our mission. The Recycling Outreach Team is available to help improve or implement waste reduction, recycling, and composting programs for multi-family dwellings and apartment complexes. TIPS FOR BETTER RECYCLING AT MULTI-FAMILY DWELLINGS

  • Recyclables must be in a separate container/dumpster from trash. Recycling Centers DO NOT sort the recyclables out once they have been mixed with trash. Request a separate tote bin/dumpster for recycling.
  • Never bag up your recyclables. Keep them loose in the container/dumpster.
  • Landlords: inform your tenants that recycling is mandatory as per local law, and provide them with a list of the items that they can recycle. Contact your recycler to make sure you understand the Do’s and Don’ts of your recycling program. Ask for a flyer or Fact Sheet on what can be recycled with the company.
  • Tenants are more likely to recycle if recycling bins are provided. Make sure recycling bins are labeled and always located directly next to trash bins in communal spaces like mail rooms, laundry rooms, etc. UCRRA offers free recycling/trash/compost stickers for landlords!
  • Make sure recycling bins are cleaned regularly and well-maintained.
  • Get off the junk mail list! Contact catalog companies directly to opt out.
  • Landlords: consider adding language in lease agreements about a recycling policy. Inform tenants about the free household hazardous waste collection program available three times per year at UCRRA, and inform them about the free electronics recycling program at UCRRA. Explaining their disposal options for these hard-to-recycle materials will help protect you from being left with unwanted junk when tenants move out!
