UCRRA Celebrates International Compost Awareness Week!

“Healthy Soils, Clean Water, Strong Communities” with Greenway

Thursday, May 8th 2025

7:00 – 8:30 PM

Rosendale Library

264 Main St, Rosendale, NY

Join Greenway Environmental for an inspiring presentation with Shabazz Jackson and Josephine Papagni, certified compost facility operators and owners of Greenway Environmental Services. Through their presentation, “Healthy Soils, Clean Water, Strong Communities” participants will discover Greenway’s leadership in environmental stewardship by recovering organic materials from the waste stream and transforming them into high-performance compost, mulch, and blended soils. Participants will learn about their innovative approach to Zero Waste Systems and how sustainable practices not only revitalize our soils but also protect our precious groundwater and surface water. Learn about composting and the materials Greenway accepts — including food scraps, leaves, stumps, logs, pallets, and unpainted lumber — and how they are processed into products that nourish our environment.
Whether you’re a gardener, sustainability advocate, or simply curious about how composting supports healthy ecosystems, this presentation will leave you motivated to make a difference! No registration required. Walk-ins welcome as seating allows. Free admission.
While visiting this library, be sure to check out their Compost Book Display, celebrating Compost Awareness Week, and pick up some of UCRRA’s Home Composting Guides! For your convenience, a list of composting-related books is attached below, curated by Eva Barnett, UCRRA Recycling Educator. Some of these books may be available at the library!

We’re Celebrating Compost Awareness Week!

About ICAW: International Compost Awareness Week  is the largest and most comprehensive education initiative of the compost industry. It’s celebrated nationwide, internationally, and officially across New York State each year during the first full week of May. The goal of ICAW is for communities everywhere to raise public awareness about the many benefits of composting and how to make and use compost to regenerate soils. Visit the New York Compost Awareness Week page for more information about local programs, events, and initiatives

2024 Theme: COMPOST… Nature’s Climate Champion! Each year, a new theme for ICAW is chosen. This year’s ICAW theme is “Sustainable Communities Begin With Compost!” The 2025 theme was chosen with the goal of highlighting composting in all kinds of communities at any scale – from the backyard home composter to community composters, to large-scale facilities to all those who recognize the many benefits of using compost on our soils. From skyscrapers to fields of corn or rural America, composting is an essential element in developing a sustainable resources management plan for any community. Composting empowers communities to manage their own waste, create job opportunities and support healthy soils with locally made compost. Composting is an action everyone can participate in, no matter the size of your home, garden, or community! Together, through the power of compost, we can create a more sustainable future for our communities!

This year’s ICAW 2025 Poster Contest winner is Abbie Sawyer from Athens, Georgia.
