UCRRA Executive Director Urges State Action on Plastics Reduction Act

Immediate Release: January 15, 2026

UCRRA Executive Director Marc Rider participated in a news conference this afternoon, joining Beyond Plastics and other industry advocates urging the adoption of the Packaging Reduction and Recycling Infrastructure Act (PRRIA – A1749 Glick/S1464 Harckham). The New York state Senate passed PRRIA in 2024 and 2025; and after passing through Assembly committees in 2025, it is now on the Assembly floor, with 75 sponsors. Speakers in the video react to a recent report relased by the Center for Sustainable Materials Management and commissioned by New York state, showing the total estimated cost for recycling in the state is $788 million each year.

We invite community organizers and passionate advocates to join UCRRA, along with Beyond Plastics, on Tuesday, February 9th, 2026 at the NY State Capitol in Albany for a rally and engaging Advocacy Day with our state Legislators to put people over plastic by passing the Packaging Reduction & Recycling Infrastructure Act. This critical bill that was passed by the NY Senate in May 2025 will address the crisis of planet-warming, ocean-polluting, landfill-clogging, human health-harming single-use plastics by reducing them at the source while saving taxpayers money and providing support for recycling and reuse/refill efforts.
