String lights (or any other type of lighting) is NOT accepted in the electronics recycling program at UCRRA.
Never put string lights (or any other type of lighting) in the recycling bin.
OTHER OPTIONS
Local home improvement stores (Lowes, Home Depot, etc.) may accept holiday string lights through a seasonal take-back program (November-December).
Companies like HolidayLEDs provide free recycling programs where you can mail in your old lights. They even offer incentives, such as discounts on new energy-efficient LED lights.
Check to see if your lights can be fixed! Often, this may be as simple as replacing the fuse. Sometimes, a string of lights may not turn on if a single bulb is out and all it needs is a replacement bulb. In some cases the issue may be a little more complex, but here’s a great video that will walk you through string light repair:
