INSTRUCTIONS

Clamshell packaging refers to two molded plastic halves joined together by a hinge. In the recycling industry, clamshell packaging is also called “Thermoforms”

Examples: salad containers, fruit/berry containers, Take-Out boxes, bakery containers, etc.

Clamshell containers are NOT recyclable at UCRRA or participating Town Transfer Stations. These containers are widely NOT recyclable and should not be placed in the recycling bin.

Recycle by shape, not by number. The most recyclable shapes are bottles, jugs, jars, tubs, and their lids. There are many considerations for what makes something ‘recyclable’ or not – such as size, shape, color, resin type, and quality of material. Visit our Recyclopedia listing called Plastic Recycling to learn more.

OTHER OPTIONS: Reduce your use of unrecyclable plastic as much as possible. Visit our webpage linked here to find a BULK/REFILL option, or a local business that participates in the TIFFIN PROJECT. Visit our FAQ page to learn more about clamshell packaging.

Contact: UCRRA at 845-336-0600. If you use a hauler who picks up your recycling curbside, please check with the company for their recycling guidelines. Although clamshells are  widely NOT accepted in local recycling programs, recycling guidelines can vary from company to company.
