INSTRUCTIONS

Wood stains and varnish products are considered hazardous waste and require special disposal.

Wood stain and varnish products (including shellacs, lacquers, urethanes, etc) are Paint Care eligible products. Responsible disposal of these items is now even more convenient, thanks to the New York Paint Stewardship Law.

Paint Care sites have been established across NY and the list is growing! The UCRRA Recycling Outreach Team encourages residents to utilize these options for easy, convenient, free disposal.

Restrictions: Sites vary on accepted limit 5-10 gallons per visit.

Hours: Products are accepted during regular business hours; Call ahead for hours and additional info.

Note: These sites accept latex and oil-based house paint, stains and varnish and other accepted items in containers up to 5 gallons in size. These sites do not accept aerosols (spray paint or other spray products), containers without original labels, or containers that are leaking or empty.

Residents with additional hazardous chemicals beyond paints, stains, etc. should request an appointment to participate in the Agency’s HHW program, as wood stain and varnish is also accepted at UCRRA’s Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection events. UCRRA hosts hazardous waste collection events each year, which are open to Ulster County residents only, and an appointment is required.

If the container is completely EMPTY, please check with your recycling service provider for instructions, though typically containers that once held hazardous substances are NOT recyclable.
